The fitness industry is unique in many ways. Personal trainers, fitness instructors, and other employees are often required to make personal contact with clients. There may be discussions about body shapes and anatomy. For comfort and practicality, form-fitting workout clothing is often worn.

In many industries, these actions and behaviors would seem abnormal. But for fitness industry professionals, this is the norm.

What is not the norm, however, is sexual harassment.

Considering the unique nature of fitness industry jobs, it is not surprising that complaints commonly arise among employees. Some employees act inappropriately in a profession that is unconventional in many ways. Sometimes sexual harassment occurs between two coworkers – and sometimes it occurs between a supervisor and an employee. In either case, it is wrong – and employees do not have to put up with it.

Identifying Sexual Harassment

Here are some warning signs of sexual harassment in the fitness industry:

  • Making inappropriate or degrading comments
  • Making inappropriate jokes
  • Making requests for sexual favors
  • Touching or grabbing
  • Leering or ogling
  • Stalking

There are many other examples, as well. Any unwanted, unwelcome workplace behavior that occurs frequently could be considered sexual harassment.

It doesn’t matter what industry you work in: Sexual harassment is never okay. If it has happened to you, your employer is required to take action to stop the behavior. When your employer fails to do so, it is advisable to take legal action and learn about your options.
